18. Alphaville: The Singles Collection

From 1988, The Singles Collection. Is a surprisingly honest collection from German technopopsters Alphaville, which I must have picked up in high school. When else would I have bothered?

By surprisingly honest, I mean there’s eight songs on this one; two versions each of four songs. So, that’s it. A four-song and four-remix best of. Of course, two of those songs are “Forever Young,” which, manages to squeeze the entirety of the 1980s, the whole decade, into a few snappy and sappy minutes. It’s impossible to listen to that song and not see Gremlins, Ronald Regan, aerobics videos, The Breakfast Club, shuttle launches, Commodore computers, parachute pants, Nena videos (oddly, not Alphaville videos), and Alf. If that’s what you’re after, look no further. Eh… why not, let’s hang onto this one. Alles klar, Der Kommissar.
